Forget protein shakes or power bars — the secret to getting fit may actually be cannabis, according to a new study, bringing a whole new meaning to the term "runner's high."
Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder examined the exercise habits of marijuana users in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington (all states where recreational marijuana is legal) and discovered that more than 80 percent of the people studied use the drug before or after a workout, according to a release.
Researchers said it combats the stereotype that pot smokers are lazy. And according to the study, 70 percent of those studied said weed actually made exercise more enjoyable, 78 percent said it boosted their recovery and 52 percent said it motivated them to work out.
However, only 38 percent of people said it boosted their performance during their workout routine.
Researchers said there was not enough evidence to encourage the use of marijuana while working out, but "if cannabis could ease pain and inflammation, helping older adults to be more active, that could be another benefit," said Angela Bryan, a senior author of the study.
Previous studies have shown marijuana use can help with pain management.
