QUAPAW - Afton's girls jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter then coasted to a 46-33 victory over Quapaw in a Lucky 7 Conference shootout here Tuesday night.
Afton also claimed a 45-39 decision in the boys' game.
“Our point guards played well - they tried to press us in the first quarter and we got some easy baskets off it,” Afton coach Ronnie Maple said.
The Lady Eagles took a hit when senior Natasha Larsen, the league's MVP last season, suffered a knee injury early in the third quarter.
“We don't know what it is,” Maple said Wednesday morning. “We will play it by ear.”
Each team scored nine points in the second quarter, leaving Afton with a 21-14 halftime advantage.
The Lady Wildcats cut into the deficit in the third quarter thanks to a 14-11 edge, but that was as close as they could. Afton held a 14-5 advantage over the last eight minutes.
Macy Gibson had a game-high 22 points for the Lady Eagles, getting 10 of that in the fourth quarter.
Larsen and Ashley Carroll had eight points each for Afton.
Quapaw got points from only three players. Amber Burkybile led the way with 16 points while Paige Radford and Kallie Brumback added 10 and seven, respectively.
Afton used a 23-17 edge over the final two quarters to claim their win in the boys' game.
The Eagles led 13-8 after the first period, but Quapaw tied the game at the half, 22-22.
Afton held a 14-12 edge in the third quarter then nailed down the win by outscoring the Cats 9-5 in the fourth.
Coy Crane and Shawn Free paced the Afton scoring, Crane netting 13 points and Free had 11.
Brandon Rollet was Quapaw's leader with 12 points.
Both schools are playing in the Northeastern A&M High School Basketball Tournament starting today.
The Afton and Quapaw girls are in the Girls' Bronze bracket and could face each other again in the semifinals.
Afton opens with Salina at noon at Fairland High School while the Lady Eagles meet Tulsa Lincoln Christian at 7:30 p.m., also at Fairland.
The two winners play at 1 p.m. Friday at Miami High School while the consolation game will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Commerce High School.
The Afton boys meet Morrisville, Mo., at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Civic Center.
The Wildcats' opener will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Commerce against Commerce.
