CLAREMORE - Some things never change - death, taxes and Claremore dominating Miami's girls in basketball.
The xxth-ranked Lady Zebras struggled a little in the first half then pulled away in the third quarter during a 62-39 victory here Thursday in a first-round 5A east regional game.
"That's what teams like Claremore do in those situations, they pull away," Miami coach JohnCarl Morgan said. "They went in at halftime and adjusted their set plays. They picked on us a little to get some easy baskets."
Miami had pulled to within four points twice in the second quarter, 20-16 and 22-18, the last coming with 3:05 until intermission on a short jumper by senior Kenna Laxton.
But the Lady Zebras finished out the half with a flurry, outscoring Miami 10-1. That gave them a 32-19 advantage at the half.
"There comes a point where we can only do so much," Morgan said. "We did everything we could. We were right with them. (Haley) KnifeChief goes on that 6-0 run and (Audra) Skimbo hits some shots, and they are up by 13 at the half."
Claremore picked up where it left off in the third quarter, using a 15-1 run to break the game open.
Miami held a 16-10 edge over the final eight minutes.
Claremore had four players score in double figures. The balanced attack included 12 points from Audra Skimbo and 10 each from Erica Johnson, Logan Proese and Monica Malone.
Laxton pumped in 20 points to lead the Lady Wardog, who finish the season with a 2-20 record.
“We put together a great game,” Morgan said. “By our stats, we outrebounded them and we limited our turnovers against a team like that. We made some fantastic passes. We hit some diagonal passes we haven't hit all year.”
