Sophomore right fielder Steve Anderson hit two home runs and drove in five to lead the Northeastern A&M Golden Norse to a 6-2 and 14-3 double-header sweep over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Tuesday afternoon at Homa Thomas Field.
Coach Roger Ward's Norsemen carried a 7-5 season mark into today's 1 p.m. twinbill with Hibbing (Minn.) Community College (0-2).
The NOC-Tonkawa Mavericks grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Golden Norse starter Trent Montgomery. With one out, Kyle Hays hit an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to give the Mavs their first lead of the game.
Carl Moniz singled to start the bottom of the second for the Norsemen. After advancing to second on a fielder's choice by Matt Cassell, Moniz stole third. Jared Jordan lined an RBI single to center, scoring Moniz for a 1-1 tie.
With one out in the top of the third inning, NOC-Tonkawa second baseman Carl Sanders singled. After a bunt single by Brandon Debo, Sanders came around to score on a two-base throwing error by NEO first baseman Taylor Clark.
Josh Botts doubled with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Jacob Taylor reached on a fielder's choice before Anderson drilled the first pitch over the left field fence to give NEO a 4-2 cushion.
Moniz doubled down the left field line to start a two-run sixth inning for the Golden Norse. Clark followed with an RBI single to center scoring Moniz.
After pinch runner Marcos Flores was picked off second, Cassell doubled deep to right. Jordan bounced into a fielder's choice with Cassell advancing to third.
A wild pitch by Jacob McDonald scored Cassell with NEO's final run.
Botts collected two doubles and Moniz added two singles to pace NEO's eight-hit attack.
Montgomery went the distance to earn the win by scattering 10 hits with only one walk and six strikeouts for NEO.
The second game ended in five innings with the Golden Norsemen scoring 14 runs on 16 hits.
Freshman shortstop Wesley Starkes doubled to right-center to start a four-run first inning for NEO. After ground outs by Blevins Courtney and Jacob Taylor, Anderson lined a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a homer.
After Mike Sodders singled, Josh White hit a 1-0 pitch deep to left for his first home run and a 4-0 Norse lead.
A single by Garan Qualls and a home run by Taylor Billings rallied NOC-Tonkawa to a 4-2 deficit in the second inning.
Singles by Marcos Flores and Starkes started a three-run outburst by the Golden Norse in the bottom of the second inning. After Courtney struck out, Taylor hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to increase NEO's lead to a 7-2 margin.
Even with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, the Golden Norsemen struck for seven runs on only six hits to put the game away.
Flores walked to start the marathon scoring. After stealing second, Flores scored on a single by pinch-hitter Moniz.
Pinch hitter Cassell singled to right scoring Moniz following a wild pitch.
Another errant pitch allowed Cassell to go to second before Taylor singled to short-center scoring Cassell.
Anderson singled to right before Sodders lifted a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field fence for a three-run homer. White followed with his second home run of the game on a 2-1 count.
A single to short center by Daniel Nichols started the top of the fifth inning for the Mavericks. Brandon Appling singled to deep second base. After Debo popped out, Cody Keifer singled to right, scoring Nichols with the last run of the game.
Sodders went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Norsemen while Starkes, Taylor, Anderson and White added two hits each.
White allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work to earn the victory with one walk and seven strikeouts.
