EDMOND - Miami played for third place in the Edmond Deer Creek East-West Classic after splitting games Friday.
The Wardogs dropped a 10-2 decision to Oklahoma City McGuinness, then bounced back to eke out a 6-4 win over Deer Creek.
Miami and Tulsa Washington each finished with 2-1 records in round-robin play. The Hornets finished second in the East pool on run differential.
Miami had beaten Guthrie 7-4 in the first round of pool play Thursday.
The Wardogs faced El Reno at 4 p.m.
They had battled McGuinness to a 2-2 standoff through five innings, “then the wheels fell off,” Mercer said.
“We beat the better team of the two when we beat Deer Creek,” Mercer said. “We saw Deer Creek's No. 1 pitcher. They beat McAlester (which crushed the Dogs 13-0 in the Pryor Tournament) earlier in the year. But then, that's been the story of our season.”
The Wardogs travel to Vinita Monday for a Verdigris Valley Conference game.
