AFTON — Continuing their solid defensive play, the Welch boys chalked up a 53-30 victory over Afton here Friday night in a Lucky 7 Conference basketball game.

The 13th-ranked Wildcats, 12-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, have allowed only 94 points in their three games since returning from the holiday break — an average of 31.3 points per game.

“Our defense was great for a third straight game,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “We ran a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap. With (Jacob) Mount out, we’ve had to move a couple people around. They’re doing a better job.”

Welch held the Eagles to single digits in three of the four quarters. The Cats jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter then rolled into the half with a 31-14 edge. They outscored Afton 14-8 in the third frame.

Joey Powers had 23 points and Brenton Hale added nine on three 3-point goals.

“They tried to take Powers out of the game but Hale hit a couple 3s and Gabe (Moore) came back with another,” Schertz said. “That got us started.”

Bradley Markes scored 11 points for Afton.

Afton’s girls gained a split by notching a 66-49 decision in the night’s first game.

The Lady Eagles (8-6 and 3-2) led 19-12 after the first quarter and continued to pull away with 16-12, 16-13 and 15-12 advantages.

Shelbie VanPielt’s 21 points headed up the scoring for Afton. Jacey Grimes added 15 and Jordyn Blanton hit 14.

Sierra Hankins had a game-high 23 for Welch.

Afton travels to Fairland Tuesday. Welch is idle until Thursday, when it begins play in the NEO tournament.
