AFTON - Scoring nine of their 16 runs in the final three innings, Welch coasted to a 16-9 victory over Afton in a high school baseball game here Thursday.
"It wasnít bad for our first game of the season," Afton coach Jason Gibson said. "We were without two starters (Jared Gibson and T.J. Korb), so we didnít do bad. We had a rally in the fourth and tied it at 7-7, but then they scored a couple runs."
The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, the key blow a bases-loaded triple by Coy Crane.
Welch grabbed the lead for good in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Brenton Hale.
The Wildcats picked up four runs in the sixth, taking advantage of two errors by Afton.
Welch tacked on a final four runs in the seventh, two coming on a base hit by Kyle Chenoweth.
Colby Brown doubled home Preston Wright and Shawn Free with Aftonís final two tallies in the bottom of the seventh.
Chenoweth and Austin McKeon had three singles each for Welch. Hale chipped in with a double and single.
Brett Warner, Clay Kelley, Gabe Moore and Tyler Sherrick had a single each.
Jake Keaton collected three singles for Afton, which also got a double and single from Colby Brown. Crane tripled and Wright and Free chipped in with a single each.
Welch travels to Shidler Monday and Afton is idle until March 26, when it begins play in the Lucky 7 Conference tournament at Quapaw.
