Erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game, Northeastern A&M's Golden Norsemen swept a double-header 14-4 and 4-1 Wednesday afternoon over Longview (Mo.) Metropolitan Community College on Homa Thomas Field.
With the sweep, coach Roger Ward's Golden Norse carry a 3-1 season record into a 2 p.m. twinbill today with the Labette (Kan.) Community College Cardinals.
Freshmen right-handers Kyle Haas )6-6 of British Columbia, Canada) and Ramon Lopez (6-6 of Hatillo, Puerto Rico) are scheduled to pitch for the Norsemen.
Against the Longview Lakers, NEO built a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the first game. Singles by Stephen Martin, Raymond Grant and a RBI fielder's choice by Marc Mimeault gave the Norse the lead.
Singles by Davey Froman and Martin started a six-run second inning for the Golden Norsemen. Grant followed with a two-run triple. After a sacrifice fly by Mimeault scored Grant, Steve Anderson and Samuel Felman singled. Aaron Roberts delivered a two-run home run and Anderson added a RBI double to give the Norse a 7-0 cushion.
Longview scored a run in the top of the third inning on singles by Danny McCorkell and Austin Graham and a RBI double by Rhett Rigby.
A three-run home run by Mimeault ignited the seven-run fourth inning for the Golden Norse. Singles by Anderson, Mike Sodders and Kevin Radford also contributed to the outburst.
The Lakers received a three-run homer by Drew Gray in the top of the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
Martin and Grant paced the 11-hit Golden Norse offense with two hits each.
Freshman left-hander Aaron Correa (6-0 of Hilo, Hawaii) allowed one run on four hits in four innings to earn the victory. Correa struck out five and walked one.
Longview grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third innings in the second game. Singles by Eric Bond and Ricardo Torres and a RBI double by McCorkell produced the only Longview run.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Carl Moniz singled. After Mimeault singled, Jared Jordan doubled down the left field line to give NEO a 2-1 lead.
Consecutive singles by Anderson, Christian Mirabal and Roberts preceded RBI singles by Sodders and Grant as the Golden Norse built a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The two-run double by Jordan and singles by Raymond Rivera, Moniz, Mimeault, Anderson, Mirabal, Roberts, Sodders and Grant constituted the offense for NEO.
Sophomore right-hander Zach Scribner earned the win for the Norsemen allowing one run on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. After Matt Ross held Longview hitless in 1.2 innings, Jordan earned a save by allowing one hit in one inning of relief.
