Grove feasted on Miami turnovers Tuesday night as the Lady Ridgerunners rolled to a 49-23 victory in a Verdigris Valley Conference basketball game at the Dogdome.

Miami, which had been plagued by double-digit turnovers in the 2007 portion of the schedule, continued to struggle in its first game back. The Lady Wardogs coughed it up 16 times in the first half and had 27 turnovers on the night.

“I was really pleased with our defense,” Grove coach Jason Geer said. “We want to get out and pressure the basketball. We can play anywhere from nine to 11 girls and still be pretty solid. That really helps us out to be able to do that.”

And as has been the case, the Lady Wardogs fell behind early as Grove broke out to an 11-5 lead in the first quarter. They didn't get their first points until the 5:38 mark when Faith Wilkins nailed a 3-point goal.

The Lady Ridgerunners held a 9-4 edge in the second frame while opening up a 20-9 halftime advantage.

Miami finally got into double figures in the scoring column when Sarah Rhodes connected on a bucket from inside with 6:53 left in the third quarter.

The visitors then went on a 17-4 run to close out the stanza, creating a 40-15 edge.

The Lady Ridgerunners finished up with a 9-8 advantage over the last eight minutes.

“We're getting better every day,” Geer said. “We've got a young group and we're starting to grow up a little bit. We're making better decisions.”

Emily Cline, Alyssa Johnson, Nikki Mullin and Katie Osborn scored four points each for Miami. Wilkins had three points and Mickey Prairie Chief and Rhodes chipped in with two each.

Stacia Sarwinski scored 12 points to lead the way for the Lady Ridgerunners. Kaydee Bassett and Margaret Pogue had nine points each.
