FAIRLAND — Seven 3-point goals helped the Fairland girls chalk up a 55-42 victory over arch rival Afton here Tuesday night in a Lucky 7 Conference basketball game.

“We played really well,” said Fairland coach Brandon Lierle. “We cut down our turnovers a lot from the last time we played them and we scored better.

“We still didn’t have a very good shooting percentage, but we played well enough on defense.”

The Lady Owls downed a season-high seven of their 21 3-point attempts. Whitney Dushane and Suezann Pascoe nailed two each while Emily Shelton, Ashlee Davis and Jessica Blalock downed one each.

“They played a 1-3-1 zone, so we had a lot of shots,” Lierle said.

Afton jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Owls went into the half with a 21-13 advantage.

Fairland was up 34-29 heading into the final stanza.

Pascoe had a game-high 19 points for the Lady Owls, who got scoring from seven different players.

Shelbie VanPielt and Jordyn Blanton scored 16 and 11, respectively, for the Lady Eagles.

Both Fairland and Afton are entered in the NEO tournament which starts Thursday.

Fairland plays Tyro (Kan.) Christian at 1:30 p.m. in the Girls’ Blue bracket at the Miami Activity Center while the Lady Eagles face the Roland JV at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center in Girls’ Gold play.
