A pair of teams that have won only a few games thus far square off tonight in a first-round Girls’ Gold bracket game at the 65th annual Northeastern A&M High School Basketball Tournament.

Miami (1-8) tackles Chetopa, Kan. at 6 p.m. in the Miami Activity Center.

The Lady Hornets slipped to 3-4 with a 31-18 loss to Northeast-Arma on Friday.

“We’re really young and small,” said Chetopa coach Debbie Moses, who is a graduate of Picher-Cardin and NEO. “We have only three seniors and two of those have any experience at all.”

It’s truly a family affair with the Lady Hornets. Senior Janea Jackson and freshman Jamie Jackson are daughters of the coach and senior Emily Moses is her step daughter.

Senior Mylesha Ingram  is averaging about 13 points a game while Emily Moses scores between 6 and 8 ppg.

“We don’t know a whole lot about them,” Miami coach Brian Busby said. “We’re going in with the attitude that we want to play our game and make them adjust to us.”

Busby said the Lady Wardogs, who have lost six straight,  have had three intense practices this week after back to back losses to Locust Grove and Seneca, Mo.

“We really got after it,” he said.
