QUAPAW — The Quapaw Wildcats gained a 7-6 victory over the Oklahoma Union Cougars here Friday.
Coach Rick Couch's Wildcats travel to Wyandotte Tuesday for a single game. The Wildcats are 6-0 on the young season.
Oklahoma Union grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after leadoff hitter Josh Baldwin reached on an error by Newton Sappington in right field.
Baldwin stole second and scored on a fielder's choice by Craig Morgan.
Quapaw responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Curtis Bacon singled and went to second on a throwing error by OU catcher Morgan.
After a wild pitch sent Bacon to third, Corey Scott singled, scoring Bacon. Scott stole second and scored as Coltin Sappington reached on an error by Baldwin's fielding error at short.
Walks by Corey Barnes and Josh Kuehn started a two-run second inning for the Cougars. Both runners advanced on an error by Ty Walker at short.
Baldwin delivered a single scoring both Barnes and Kuehn for a 3-2 Cougar lead.
Another error by Baldwin on a grounder by Walker started a two-run second inning for Quapaw.
After Blayden Stand walked, Bacon singled scoring both Walker and Stand for a 4-3 Wildcat lead.
Morgan Morey increased Quapaw's lead to 5-3 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Pitcher James Rotzel was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fourth inning for the Wildcats. Bacon followed with a single to right sending Rotel to third.
Scott bounced into a fielder’s choice as Rosel scored for a 6-3 Quapaw cushion.
Mitch Woolfolk singled to start the top of the fifth inning. After stealing seond and third, Woolfolk scored by pilfering home plate for a 6-4 deficit.
Three Quapaw errors allowed the Cougars to forge a 6-6 tie in the top of the sixth inning. A single by Eric Hill was the only hit during the rally.
Without the benefit of a hit, the Wildcats parlayed three Cougar errors into the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rotzel walked, advanced to second on a fielding error by Nate Perkins at first. Bacon reached on a throwing error by pitcher Kuehn as Rotzel came around to score.
Bacon collected three singles to lead the eight-hit Quapaw attack.
