WELCH - Matt Johnson scored 17 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead Tyro (Kan.) Christian to a 72-68 come-from-behind victory over Welch here Saturday night.

Welch gained a split by breezing to an 83-27 decision in the girls' game.

“He (Johnson) hit a couple of 3s - we were boxing him and he still jumped back and hit a couple of NBA-range 3s,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said.

The Wildcats (6-8) were up by 12 at one point in the third quarter, but Tyro managed to cut the gap to four, 48-44, after Fansler and Moore got into foul trouble.

“They hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to cut it to four,” Schertz said.

The Eagles held a 28-20 edge in a wild final stanza to escape with the victory.

Each team scored 14 points in the first quarter then Welch held a 21-16 edge in the second period. Tyro outscored the Wildcats 14-13 in the third frame.

While Johnson had 26 points, sophomore Evan Hand chipped in with 25.

They stole the thunder from Welch's Joey Powers, who finished with 35 points. Fansler also was in double figures, netting 14.

Tyro converted on 17 of 25 trips to the free throw line while Welch managed 11 of 23.

In the girls' game, Welch jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The Lady Wildcats continued to pull away thanks to a 25-9 run in the second frame, then erupted for 29 points in the third quarter to open up a 72-22 advantage.

“That was by far our best quarter of the year,” Welch coach Shawn Goodwin said. “We hit three treys - we played really well.”

Welch closed out the game with an 11-5 margin over the final eight minutes.

Katie McClurg had 19 points for the Lady Cats, who also picked up 14 from Kalleigh Chrz and 10 from Kirsten Leppla.

Amber Eubanks scored nine points to lead Tyro.

The Lady Wildcats rolled to a 52-34 victory over Fairland in a Lucky 7 Conference game Friday night.

Fairland was up 12-9 after the first quarter, but Welch rallied in the second with a 17-8 advantage.

The Lady Cats started to pull away in the third frame thanks to a 10-6 edge, then took charge with a 16-8 advantage in the fourth.

Chrz and Jordan Amos scored 11 points each to lead the Welch scoring.

Chelsea Goins scored 11 points for the Lady Owls.

Welch travels to Commerce tonight for Lucky 7 games.
