ALTUS — Staunch defense over an outgunned Western State College squad carried the Northeastern A&M Lady Norse to a 78-42 rout over the Lady Pioneers Wednesday night in the Pioneers Fieldhouse.

While winning their seventh consecutive game, coach Jim Rowland’s Lady Norse are 6-2 in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference and 12-6 overall.

The Lady Norse travel to El Reno on Monday for a 6 p.m. conference contest with Redlands Community College.

Limited to only six players because of illness and injuries, the Lady Pioneers slide to 0-9 in the OCAC and 4-14 on the year.

Neither team faired well shooting the basketball in the first half. While the Lady Norse hit 16 of 41, including 5 of 21 from 3-point range, for 39 percent, the Lady Pioneers managed only 7 of 18, including 4 of 9 from the 3-point area, for 39 percent.

The end result produced a 39-23 advantage for the Lady Norse at intermission.

During the final 20 minutes the Lady Norse shooting woes continued  (18 of 47 for 39 percent) while the outmanned Lady Pioneers were limited to a 6 of 27 performance by the NEO defense for a mere 22 percent.

Lady Norse sophomore center Jelena Cerina produced her second consecutive double-double game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Veteran guard Kashei Hopkins returned after missing one game with an illness to contribute 10 points.

Chelsea Brown led Western with 12 points while Reyshawn Johnson and Jessica Baez scored 11 points each.
