COMMERCE — A little bit of rain wasn’t going to stop the Mickey Mantle Classic Thursday, April 4,
A brief shower led tournament officials to bring the tarp out to cover the infield at Mickey Mantle Field.
But after the weather passed through, the tarp came off and play resumed with only about a 25-minute delay.
Thursday’s scores at Commerce included Wyandotte 4, Afton 1; Quapaw 11, Diamond, Missouri 0; Neosho, Missouri 5, Miami 1, and Commerce 15, Diamond 5.
In action at Joe Becker Field in Joplin it was Sarcoxie, Missouri 11, Welch 7; East Newton, Missouri 12, Neosho JV 2; Grove JV 11, Welch 2; Neosho JV 11, Fairland 1, and Grove 3, McDonald County, Missouri 1.
An additional nine pool games were scheduled for Friday, leading off with Quapaw vs. Commerce at 10 a.m. at Mantle Field.
Other games in Commerce are Haskell vs. Afton, noon; McCounty vs. Fort Gibson, 2:30 p.m.; Haskell vs. Wyandotte, 4:30 p.m., and Grove vs. Fort Gibson, 7 p.m.
Then at Joe Becker its Sarcoxie vs. Grove JV, noon; East Newton vs. Fairland, 2 p.m.; Neosho vs. Tahlequah Sequoyah, 4:30 p.m., and Miami vs. Sequoyah, 6:30 p.m.
A final nine games will be played Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
Fifth-place games will be at Wendell Redden Field in the Joplin Sports Complex; third-place games at Joe Becker and championship games at Mantle Field.
The Miners Division title game will be at 10 a.m., followed by the Comet Division at noon and the Triple Crown Division at 2 p.m.
“Diamond” Jim Gentile will throw out the first pitch prior to the start of the Miners Division game.
He, Danny and David Mantle will be on hand at the ballpark and then at the awards banquet Saturday night at Miami’s First Christian Church.
There will be silent and live auctions.
