MIAMI —It’s game week — sort of — for the Miami Wardogs.

MHS will have their only preseason scrimmage Friday, Aug. 17, when they host Locust Grove and Kellyville in a three-way Red Robertson Field.

The Wardogs had a run-through on what they learned during the first week Saturday on Ed Craig Field at the high school.

“The kids have given quite a bit of effort,” head coach Zach Gardner said. “The last couple days, we kinda ran down, but we’re expecting a lot out of them. They didn’t have quite as much get-up-and-go at the end of the week, but we feel like we’ve accomplished some things.”

Friday was the first day Oklahoma high schools were allowed to have full-scale practices in pads.

“We need an opponent besides beating up on ourselves so we can see where we’re at,” Gardner said.

Action Friday will start at 6:30 p.m.

“It will be a big evaluation process,” Gardner said. “We will have to make adjustments on the fly since we will have to be ready to go the next week.”

The Wardogs kick off the 2018 season on Aug. 24 at Claremore Sequoyah, then open the home portion of the schedule on Aug. 31 with Jay.

Because the traffic at Robertson Field is starting to pick up —NEO football and soccer have begun preseason prep, too — Wardog practices this week will alternate between Robertson Field and the high school.

Monday, Aug. 13 and Wednesday, Aug. 15 are at MHS and Tuesday, Aug. 14 and Thursday, Aug. 16 at Robertson Field.
