QUAPAW — Getting the deciding run in the fifth inning, Quapaw squeezed out a 4-3 baseball win over Oklahoma Union in a pre-district tune-up here Tuesday, April 24.
Both teams head into the post season, Quapaw (10-11) going to Commerce for District 15 and Oklahoma Union (7-14) at Pawhuska in District 30.
Quapaw scored three times in the third and Oklahoma Union got three in the top of the fifth.
An error, double by Nick Hemphill and a bases-loaded walk to Chris Durbin accounted for QHS’ three runs.
Oklahoma Union’s three runs came on a two-out rally.
The Wildcats got what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Matt Lovell drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice by Dakota Case and scored on a single to right by Ethan Mate.
Rex Burkybile and Hemphill had a double each for the Cats.
Jonas Gregory, Case and Mate each had a base hit.
OU’s offense included a double and single by Dally Ellis and a single each by Jace Bottoms, Jace Hollingshed and Logan Key.
The game had a “spring training” feel as four different players pitched for Quapaw — Jordan Carolus, Matt Lovell, Kale Thomasson and Case — while OU used six hurlers.
Carolus, Lovell and Case each threw two innings and Thomasson went one inning.
Cougar pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and six walks.
