AFTON — Seniors Lupe Prado and Hunter Burkybile and sophomore Danny Salinas combined for 51 points as the Commerce boys coasted to a 58-44 victory over Afton here Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Prado had a game-high 28 points and Burkybile and Salinas added 13 and 10, respectively.

Afton (3-11) led 13-12 and 20-18 after the first two periods, but the Tigers (13-8) dominated the second half.

They held a 23-10 advantage in the third quarter then outscored Afton 17-14 over the final eight minutes.

Gabe Gray and Cruz Munson had three points and Hayden Moss chipped in with a free throw for Commerce.

Brett Hollon was the Eagles’ scoring leader with 17 points followed by Brett Fuser with 14.

Cole Mikesell added five followed by Teegan Maupin and Briar Julian with two each.

Girls: Afton 43, Commerce 37

A 19-13 edge in the fourth quarter helped the Lady Eagles (6-12) pick up the win.

They had been up 13-6 after the first quarter then carried a 19-9 lead into the half.

Commerce (3-18) got back into the game with a 15-5 run in the third quarter.

Carlee Shinn was Afton’s leading scorer with 22 points. She got 10 of those on free throws.

Others scoring for the Lady Eagles were Ashley Kunkel and Quetta Woodall with six each, Layne Hudson with five, Skyler Hicks with three and Clarissa Rice, one.

River Friel and Dawn Convirs topped the Lady Tiger scoring with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Morgan Connell chipped in with four, Marisa Scott had three and Sunny Crawford and Ashley Myers tallied two each.


Both head into the post-season with district tournament games on Friday, Feb. 16, Afton traveling to Chouteau for District 3 play while Commerce is at Kiefer in District 5.

Both Afton have been paired against Chelsea while Commerce faces Haskell. Girls’ games start at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 8 p.m.
