WELCH – For the second time in five days, the Welch boys chalked up a win over South Coffeyville.
The Wildcats claimed a 56-44 victory in a Boys Norse consolation game Friday, Jan. 19, at the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M High School Basketball Tournament.
Then on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Welch coasted to a 41-17 win here.
The Wildcat (6-11), who are working on a three-game winning streak, tossed a shutout in the second quarter of Tuesday’s rematch while opening up a 27-5 advantage.
Welch held an 8-3 edge in the third frame then held on as it was outscored by the Lions 9-6 in the final stanza.
Braxton Turner’s 13 points headed up the scoring for Welch.
Colton Armstrong finished with eight points, followed by Nate Beaty, six; Montana Price, four; Gunner Johnson and Trenton Seigel, three each, and Brady Chenoweth and Daniel Windle, two each.
Dante’ White scored six for the Lions (3-7).
Girls: Welch 66, South Coffeyville 34
The Class A No. 17 Lady Wildcats were up 19-9 in the first quarter and never looked back.
They carried a 31-18 lead into the break then outscored South Coffeyville 22-8 and 13-8 in the third and fourth quarters.
Welch (16-1) picked up a game-high 20 points from Aspen Wood.
Maddie Schaper scored nine while Jayci Atwood hit seven, Olivia Chenoweth six, Jaeli Jorgenson and Halle Rupert, five each; Chloe Hitz, three, and, Madison Gilman, two.
Starla Whitney paced South Coffeyville (4-6) with 15 points.
Welch hosts Ketchum Friday, Jan. 26, then travels to Afton on Saturday.
