AFTON — The Afton girls rolled to a 51-38 victory over illness-depleted Bluejacket here Friday, Jan. 12.
The Lady Eagles (3-5) broke out to a 13-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
They coasted into the half with a 39-19 advantage then outscored Bluejacket 5-4 in the third and 17-15 in the fourth.
The Lady Chieftains (6-6) were without two starters and three who started were really sick, according to coach Jason Bates. One starter fouled out within two minutes of the third quarter. “I’ve coached 10 years. I’ve never had anything like this happen,” Bates said. “We can barely practice. None are cleared at least until Monday.”
Carlee Shinn and Skyler Hicks had 18 points each for Afton.
The Lady Eagles also got five each from Layne Hudson and Quetta Woodall, four from Ashley Kunkel and one from Ashley Turley.
Bluejacket’s leading scorer was Lydia Pipins with 11 points.
Taci Mitchell added nine, followed by Tiffany Ayres, five; Lea Hency and Laura Collins, four each; Dee Dee Satterwhite, three, and Sydnee Martin, two.
Bluejacket claimed a 54-36 win in the boys’ game.
The Lady Chieftains faced No. 7 Burlington Saturday at Frontier then host Commerce on Monday, Jan. 15 and Afton Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Afton travels to Bluejacket then begins play in the NEO Tournament Thursday, Jan. 18.
