WELCH — Host Welch and Fairland took home first-place trophies Saturday at the annual Kenneth Sooter Invitational basketball tournament at Welch High School.

Wyandotte and Watts claimed third-place awards also on Saturday.

Blue First: Welch 30, Foyil 23

In a low-scoring affair, the Lady Wildcats held on for the win over the Lady Panthers.

Aspen Wood and Olivia Chenoweth each drilled a 3-pointer as Welch took a 18-12 margin into halftime.

In the third, both team combined for nine points. Chenoweth and Abbey Armstrong each hit a pair of free throw for the Lady Wildcats.

Hannah Mount scored four of Welch’s eight four-period points.

“We played just well enough to win,” said Welch coach Shaun Goodwin. “Foyil did a good job keeping us from getting it in to our post.

Wood, Chenoweth, Mount and Taya Buchanan each chipped in six points — a game-high for the game.

“We are gonna take a few day to heal up and regroup, and hopefully start playing better for the second half of the season,” added Goodwin.

White First: Fairland 41, Wesleyan Christian 35

Breanne Johnson tossed in a game-high 11 points and Chloe Bunce hit 10 as the Lady Owls edged the Lady Mustangs for first place.

Fairland jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first and the defense held the Lady Mustangs to single digits in each period for the remainder of the game.

The Lady Owls went into halftime with a 26-12 margin.

Wesleyan’s Alicia Deal led all scorers with a game-high 18, while teammate Camryn Holley chipped in 11.

Blue Third: Wyandotte 46, Chetopa (Kanas) 30

Tarrah Stephens poured in a game-high 23 points as the Lady Bears whipped the Lady Hornets for third.

Wyandotte built a commanding 14-3 first-period lead and never looked back. They went into halftime with a 33-15 margin.

Elizabeth Mensink chipped in five and Aranda Mair added four for the Lady Bears.

Cambri Conard led Chetopa with 10.

White Third: Watts 48, Copan 38

Lynn Davis scored a team-high eight points to lead a balanced scoring attach as the Lady Engineers downed the Lady Hornets of third.
