Jackie Ray “Jack” Bond of Lake Kiowa, Texas, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, after a 16-month battle with cancer.
He was 79.
Mr. Bond was born Dec. 23, 1928, in O’Donnell, Texas. He grew up in Plainview, Texas, where he was a star athlete.
He received a master’s degree in education from Oklahoma State University.
He was a Korean War veteran of the Navy, serving four years on the USS Chara and the USS Pictor and earning the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He played football while in the Navy.
He played professional baseball before entering the Navy.
He later severed in teaching, coaching and administrative capacities, serving as principal and superintendent in various communities in New Mexico and Oklahoma. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary Ruth Shannon Stoneham; two children, Melea Ann Welch of Walters and Doug Bond and his wife Sheree of Maysville; two stepchildren, Donna Sonteham of Port Richmond, Calif., and Ron Stoneham of New York City, N.Y.; two sisters, Jane Wilks of Olton, Texas, and Peggy Lay of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Clint Privett of Norman, Sam Bond of Maysville, Rachel and Joe Masoner of Waurika, Cade and ADeidra Simmons of Ada and Bree and Michael Medcalf of Temple, and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Raeann and Austin Masoner of Waurika.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Paula Ann Johnson; one brother, Jim Bond, and three sisters, Murl Stone, Zoe Drake and Nadine Ishmael.
Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Gainesville, Texas. Burial will be Sunday in Miami.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Geo. J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home in Gainesville.
