Former Alaska and King Salmon resident John Wood, 67, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Grove Nursing Center in Grove, Okla.
John was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Welch, Okla., to Otis and Lois Wood. He graduated from Miami High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1959. He served in the Navy until 1965 with a world cruise on the USS Bainbridge. He was a licensed pilot and flight instructor.
He moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1971 and later settled in King Salmon, Alaska. He worked at the King Salmon Air Force base as a civilian until early retirement at age 53. In 1997, he retuned to Oklahoma and settled in Wyandotte.
John's interests included flying, sailing, diving, biking, photography, being with friends, fishing, hunting and travel. He was highly skilled and built his own homes in Alaska and remodeled his home in Wyandotte. After enjoying all the activities and travel that a life in Alaska offers, he enjoyed fishing, camping and visiting friends around the country.
John explored, learned and changed throughout his life. He had a strong work ethic and always had a helping hand for friends and family. He earned and kept the respect of those his life touched. He had an easy going sense of humor that was ever present and a winning grin. He was loved dearly and will be in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his friend and long-time companion, Jeanie Wilcox, of Wyandotte, Okla.; daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Don Perrin of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Mike Wood of Garberville, Calif.; son, Alan Wood of Wasilla; grandsons, John and Owen Perrin of Anchorage, Alaska; four brothers, Leonard Wood of Miami, Okla., Charles Wood and wife Paula of King Salmon, Alaska, James Wood and wife Ann of Fairland, Okla., and Jack Wood and wife Diane of Welch, Okla.; two sisters, Mary Stanley and husband Jim of Tulsa, Okla., and Jean Stephanson and husband Henry of Miami, Okla., and many nieces, nephews and cousin.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Williams Timberhill Cemetery, east of Welch, Okla. The Rev. Bob Barker will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla.
