Emma Ethel Starling of Choctaw died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at the Wolfe Living Center at Summit Ridge in Harrah. She was 89.

Starling was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Willie Elmer and Elsie (Mason) Weaver. She moved to Choctaw from Miami approximately 12 years ago.

She worked in several restaurants. She and her second husband worked as caretakers of the Nevada Boys Ranch. She also worked at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Miami.

She was married to Thomas Newsom. He preceded her in death. She later married R.C. Starling. He preceded her in death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by one son, Tommy Lee Newsom on April 19, 1993; her parents, seven sisters and one brother.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Uhles of Belton and Shirley Vanover and her husband Marvin of Choctaw; one son and his wife, Wayne and Kay Newsom of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Ida Thulin of Miami; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami with Kenny Ray Thulin officiating. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami.
