Dorothy M. Walters of Nixa, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Ozark Riverview Manor in Ozark, Mo. She was 82.

Walters was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Cardin to Joseph and Mary (Rush) McCoontze. She moved to the Springfield, Mo., area in 1972 from Cardin.

She was the founding member and served as secretary and treasurer of the Southwest Missouri Indian Center in Springfield. She was a member of the Ottawa and Miami Tribes. She reigned as Senior Pow Wow Princess of 2003. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Charles A. Walters. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Sylvester McCoontze, and one sister, Jessie Moore.

Survivors include four sons, Rickey Ross of Oklahoma City, Mickey Ross of Springfield, Larry Ross of Nixa and Bull Wilson of Miami; two daughters, Sharon Templin and Debbie Garrett, both of Miami, and one brother, LeRoy McCoontze of El Paso, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Picher with the Rev. Fred Von Moss officiating. Burial will be in Baxter Springs Cemetery in Baxter Springs, Kan.

Pallbearers will be Rickey Ross, Mickey Ross, Larry Ross, Bull Wilson, Turtle Burkybile and Joshua Garrett. Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Ross, Elkai Ross, Skyler Brown and Nakoah Brown.

Native American rites will be conducted by Leonard Smith.

The family will receive friends at 1003 8th Ave. NW in Miami until the service.
