Charles E. “Gene” Bowman died Jan. 7, 2007. He was 85.
Bowman was born May 6, 1921, in Treece, Kan., to Earl and Clara Bryan Bowman. He was reared by his grandmother and stepgrandfather, Agnes and Charles “Gus” Tracy. He was a member of the National Honor Society while in high school.
He was a World War II veteran of the Army where he achieved the rank of sergeant in the Army Calvary Recon Division.
He worked for 35 years for Spencer (Gulf) Chemical Company, where he was a chief operator and foreman. A long-time member of First Christian Church in Baxter Springs, Kan., in recent years he made his church home with Crossroads Christian Church. He served in many offices in the church, most notably as an elder. He was a 12-gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross.
He married Charlene Easley Bowman on Feb. 27, 1946. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Jared and Michelle; his father; his stepmother and one brother.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Penny Wands and her husband David and Cindy Bowman; five grandchildren, Shawn, Angie, Tamara, Tara and Lindsey, and nine great-grandchildren, Brittni, Beau, Parge, Kyle, Elijah, Reagan, Jared, Kaylynn and Will David.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Crossroads Christian Church.
Friends may call at their convenience at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs.
