Charles Edward “John” Happel of Big Cabin died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at his home. He was 85.

Happel was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Allen County, Ind., to Arthur Happel and Irma (Druet) Happel. He moved to Florida in 1962 and to the late area in 1986.

He served as an iron worker in the Merchant Marines during World War II, working on ships used during the war and continued his iron working later on. He became a commercial fisherman while in Florida. He was a member of the Iron Workers Union since 1940 and a member of the American Legion of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

He married Dora Jean Crooks in 1950. She preceded him in death in 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Happel.

Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Sandra and Lawrence Herring of Pryor; one sister, Mary Bianski of LaOtto, Ind.; one brother, Donald Happel of Columbia City, Ind.; three grandsons, James Merrill and wife Linda of Tulsa, Michael Merrill of Big Cabin and Matthew Merrill of Fayetteville, Ark., eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

No formal services are planned.

Burial will be in McLaughlin Cemetery in Afton.
