As Americans honor the national flag on Thursday, local veterans will continue their tradition of honorably disposing of torn, faded or tattered flags.

American Legion “Floyd L. Perry” Post 147 is currently collecting damaged flags from the general public and will dispose of them in a manner consistent with U.S. military guidelines.

The ceremony, slated for 6:30 p.m. on the 230th anniversary of the Continental Congress' adoption of the flag, is open to the public and will take place at the southeast corner of Riverview Park in Miami.

In the past, the American Legion post has collected more than 200 flags for disposal, according to organizers.

The event is expected to last about 30 minutes.

Those who have flags that need to be disposed of are asked to drop them off at a Miami fire station, the Cable ONE office or bring it the park at 6 p.m. Thursday.
