As of 6 p.m. Sunday, 70,000 customers of Empire Electric Co. were without service, according to a statement released by the Joplin, Mo.,-based utility company.

The electric company provides power to a portion of residents living in Ottawa County.

Amy Bass, communications director for Empire Electric Co., said field managers were scheduled to meet together at 10 a.m. today at which time the company will release updated figures.

“The company again warns that this is a multi-day event and customers are encouraged to take steps to prepare to be without power for several days, Bass said.
