Sixteen-month-old Landon Lawson has been announced as the winner of the 2010 Newspapers in Education baby calendar contest.

Landon is the son of Marty and Heather Lawson. He is the grandson of Carol and Terry Lawson, of Miami, Jimmy and Katherine Herring, of Henryetta, and Tommy and Kathy Thulin, of Miami.

Landon has three siblings, Sarah Lawson, Gage Lawson and Bre Herring.

Landon enjoys watching football and hunting videos with his daddy and recently learned to say “football,” according to his mother.

“We would like to say thank you to everyone who supported Landon in the contest,” said Heather Lawson.

This is the third year the News-Record has produced a baby calendar. The theme of featuring babies proved to be far more popular than an earlier effort that featured readers’ pets.

The idea of doing a children’s-themed calendar was brought to the News-Record by Pam Lovell, our former circulation secretary. The 2010 calendar was done in her honor after her sudden death last year.

Proceeds from the calendar are applied to the Newspaper in Education program. This money comes from the 25-cent votes cast for all of the babies entered in the contest. The N.I.E. program benefits area schools by funding newspaper subscriptions to participating classrooms. The child who garnishes the most 25-cent votes is named the "Baby of the Year."

“This is by no means a beauty contest,” said News-Record Advertising Manager Mark Rogers. “Although I feel this year’s calendar featured some gorgeous contestants.”

The winning baby receives a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and his or her picture appears on the cover of the calendar as well as other spots throughout.

The calendars are distributed to News-Record subscribers free of charge on Dec. 31.

The News-Record plans to produce a calendar again for 2011. Watch for announcements mid-summer.
