BAXTER SPRINGS, KAN. -Cowtown Days, a celebration of the “old west” history of the Kansas' first cowtown, will begin Aug. 23.

This year's event will feature the Pride of Texas carnival and a host of area entertainers.

Carnival armbands are on sale now through Aug. 20 for $15 each and will allow one full night's access to all the rides. Armband prices purchased during the event will be $18.

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle, complete with trailer, valued at more than $12,000, will be given away Aug. 25. Chances to win are $1 each or six for $5.00. They can be purchased at the Baxter Springs Chamber of Commerce and participating Baxter Springs merchants.

Activities begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 with “Gospel Night” featuring “Brothers with Purpose” singing the top gospel favorites.

The following evening night is devoted to country music with the Kansas Steel Guitar Association bringing area steel guitar artists to the event.

Additionally, the Duling Family will return for a third straight year of Cowtown Days entertaining.

Saturday's events begin with the Pizza Hut goldfish races at 9 a.m. The Pie and Cake Contest follow at 10 a.m.

Also at 10 a.m., at the Johnston Public Library, the Kiwanis Classic Car Show will begin.

At 11 a.m., the annual Boy Scout Bean Feed begins at the library.

Motorcycles are expected to start rolling into the Kiwanis Park around noon to register for the first ever Cowtown Days Poker Run. Riders will follow at 100-mile trek through the Kansas countryside.

The big Cowtown Days annual parade will begin at 2 p.m. on Military Avenue.

Following the parade, entertainment begins at Kiwanis Park with the Sunflower Dance and Baton kids performing. The Cow Patty Bingo contest begins at the same time.

Later, there will be Tai-Kwon-Do demonstrations throughout the afternoon. At 3:30, area bands will compete for a chance to record their work in a Battle of the Bands.

The evening entertainment begins at 5:30 p.m. with “On the Edge,” a musical group featuring “oldies” music. There will be a pie and cake auction during the musical breaks as well as the announcement of the winners in the poker run.

Returning after a one-year hiatus will be “Coupe de Ville,” playing favorites from the 1970s and 80s.

Saturday's events will close with a 10 p.m. announcement of the winner of the Harley-Davidson.
