A Miami man died Sunday after being struck by a falling tree limb as he cleared storm debris from his yard.

Obed Gonzalez, 43, sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to a local hospital.

Gonzalez's death is Miami's first fatality directly related to the Dec. 8 ice storm.

According to emergency personnel, Gonzalez was cutting limbs in his backyard at approximately 5:15 p.m., when a branch struck him and pinned him against the tree.

Heavy winds over the weekend brought down weakened branches and dangling limbs .

The local death prompted city and county officials to issue warnings to residents to be cautious as they attempt to clean up their property.

Gonzalez was the state's seventeenth reported ice storm-related death according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Most deaths were due to automobile accidents, two Oklahoma residents died from hypothermia and two, including Gonzalez, from a fallen limb.
