MIAMI — In collaboration with Sodexo Campus Services at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa County will be handing out free afternoon snacks and dinners Monday through Friday through May 29 at its site in Riverview Park.

The meals will be provided from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Plans are to transition to the regular summer food program soon afterwards.

The program is open to all youth ages 18 and under free of charge on a first-come, first serve basis. Recipients should stay in their cars and drive through to pick up meals.

Mackenzie Garst, executive director of the Miami Boys & Girls’ Club, said “we, in partnership with Sodexo, want to help the community during this time in uncharted territory.”

The Miami Boys & Girls Club is located at 830 D SE.

“We understand parents have a lot on their plates, so if we can take dinner off their minds we feel it is a way we can help the community,” Garst said. “We are doing this through the month of May and then, hopefully, will transition to our summer food program where we serve breakfast and an afternoon snack.

“Based on the governor’s three-phase reopening guidelines, it looks like we fall into phase three, so if all goes well we anticipate being able to open on June 1 for our normal summer program. But again, that’s tentative.

“I think this food program means the kids can be kids and have fun and won’t have to worry about where their next meal is going to come from. The Boys & Girls’ Club is here to support the community and help families and we feel like this is our service and the right thing to do,” Garst said.
