Betty Lou (Brock) Beard, 90, of Joplin, Missouri, passed from this life to our heavenly father April 27, 2019. Betty was born September 28, 1928 in Miami, Oklahoma to Nelson and Nora (Buffalo) Brock.
She and Cliff, her husband of 44 years, were dry cleaning business owners for many years until Cliff drove for Consolidated Freightways. Betty was proud to be the oldest ½ blood member of the Quapaw Tribe and worked for the Tribe in various capacities at the Quapaw Casino and the Downstream Casino Resort until she was well into her 80’s. She decorated the annual Christmas tree at the Downstream Casino every year until her death. She loved her Tribe and was loved by all who knew her. Her Indian name which translates to “Iron Woman” was very fitting as she was strong and feisty.
She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifton Beard, her siblings George Brock and Virgie (Brock) Fisher, a son Richard Beard, and an infant daughter Linda Beard.
Survivors include two daughters, Virgie Henry and Betty Gaedtke (husband Steve), three sons, Clifton Beard, Billy Beard (wife Carolyn) and Richard Rounsville, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Betty requested no services and her family will honor that request. Please join her family and friends to honor and celebrate her spirit and life with a memorial dinner to be held at the Quapaw Tribe Community Complex on Tuesday, April 30th at 12:00 noon. Smoking to begin at 11:30 a.m. The family has entrusted care to Derfelt Funeral Home in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Online condolences can be made at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com
