Supporters of SQ788, legalization of medical marijuana in Oklahoma, to host two open forums at the Miami Public Library this month.

MIAMI – Advocates for State Question 788, to legalize the licensed cultivation, use, and possession of marijuana for medicinal purposes, will host two informational forums in Miami this May.

Monday, May 7 and Saturday, May 19 from 12 to 2 p.m. on both days, Oklahomans for Cannabis will host forums on medical marijuana at the Miami Public Library, 200 N. Main, providing a platform for discussion, questions, and voter registrations.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Guest speakers will include Dana McMurchy, Vote Yes on 788 PAC; Kelly Pyle, MA, LPC, vocational rehabilitation/drug counselor; Jason Case, veteran; and Chris Moe, legislative watchdog, aka "Uncle Grumpy."

Those unable to attend will be able to view the Monday, May 7 forum as it happens on the Miami News-Record Facebook page as a live-streamed event or after 3 p.m. the same day at the MNR website,, or the MNR YouTube Channel.

If SQ788 passes, a license would be required for possession of medicinal marijuana that must be approved by an Oklahoma Board Certified Physician. However, there would be no specific qualifying conditions.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health would be charged with issuing licenses to Oklahoma residents 18 years and older and would also issue seller, growing, packaging, transportation and research and caregiver licenses.

Licenses would allow an individual possession of up to 3 ounces of marijuana on their person and 8 ounces of marijuana in their residence.

Oklahoma voters will make a decision on SQ788 on June 26. The last day to register for that election is June 1.
