Bessie Virginia Knight passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at her home in Miami. She was 90.
Mrs. Knight was born April 13, 1918, in Commerce to Elisha and Lela Gilbert.
She graduated from Grove High School and later moved to Miami in 1942 to work as a seamstress at Patterson's during World War II. She met and married Ernest Paul Knight on Jan. 30, 1946.
Mrs. Knight was a homemaker, seamstress and cook who loved her family and friends.
She was a charter member of Bethany Christian Church and elder emeritus who served her church for more than 50 years. The importance of literacy and education for all people was a lifelong passion, and she was instrumental in forming the Literacy and Evangelism International program in Miami and volunteered as a tutor and tutor trainer for more than twenty-five years.
She had a love for gardening that inspired her to work in the art of pressed flowers. Her flowers, real or pressed, were used to create beautiful floral arrangements as well as cards, pictures and other keepsakes for friends and loved ones. She also shared this talent by giving pressed flower demonstrations to many clubs and organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 and sister Margaret Tipton.
She is survived by her children, Sherry and husband Jim Cummings of Weatherford, Paul Knight and his wife Junelle of Oklahoma City and Carla and her husband Mike Lillie of Miami; five grandchildren, Matthew Knight and his wife Misha of Oklahoma City, James Cummings and his wife Geraldine of Anadarko, Joshua Cummings of Weatherford, Vanessa Lillie of Washington, D.C, and Nathan Lillie of Stillwater and three great-grand children Malley and Mabrey Knight and Julianna Cummings.

The family will receive friends for visitation today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Christian Church with Pastor Ron Eden officiating.
Graveside services will follow at the Walker Cemetery in Welch.
