Emma Lee Monroe of Jay died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Grove. She was 87.
Mrs. Monroe was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Delaware County to Virgil and Pearl Abercrombie. She attended school in Piney and Lindburg and graduated from Jay High School in 1940. She lived in Pineville, Mo., moving to McMinnville, Ore., in 1941. She moved to Brookings, Ore., in 1950, to Battle Mountain, Nev., in 1967, and to Jay in 1982.
She worked as a file clerk for two nurses in the Old Health Clinic and later at Montgomery Wards. She later worked in the logging business, a service station and a tire and recap shop. She later owned a tire and gift shop. She attended the First Baptist Church for 16 years.
She married G.C. Monroe on Sept. 14, 1940, in Pineville. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Karen Kay and Sharon Lee; her parents, and one sister, Marie Smith.
Survivors include five sisters, Molly and Callie Morgan of Roseburg, Ore., Josephine Smith of Bakersfield, Calif., Betty Swaim of Gentry, Ark., and Charlene Johnson of Jay; two brothers, William Abercrombie of Hood River, Ore., and John Abercrombie of Jay; three grandchildren, Brooke, Steven and Jose; one great-granddaughter, Megan, and one great-great-grandson, Bailey.
Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Turner Funeral Chapel in Jay. The Rev. Josh Spires officiated. Burial was in Mount Herman Cemetery in Jay.
