Lorraine M. “Rene” Dawes of Quapaw passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at her home. She was 79.
She was born Oct. 9, 1927, to Horace and Fairy (Williams) Mercer in Miami.
She was a homemaker and also worked as an optometric assistant for her son. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Quapaw and several civic and volunteer organizations in Fort Smith, Ark. She was a member of Spring River Indian Baptist Church.
She married Charles E. Dawes on April 16, 1948, in Miami. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, June Wren, and one brother, Andy Lewis.
She lived in the Fort Smith and Quapaw areas all of her life.
Survivors include one daughter, Charla Rene Dawes, of the home; one son, Kevin Dawes and his wife Sharon of Baxter Springs, Kan.; three sisters, Evelyn McMinn of Quapaw, Shirley Grintz of Lebanon, Ore., and Sheila Mercer of Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, Bob Mercer of the state of Washington, Jay Mercer of Lawrence, Kan., and Danny Mercer of Kansas City, Kan.; one granddaughter, Kari Barrett and her husband Ryan of Tahlequah; one grandson, J.C. Dawes of Baxter Springs; one great-granddaughter, Avery Barrett of Tahlequah, and her beloved sisters-in-law, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Spring River Indian Baptist Church, southeast of Quapaw, and the Rev. Ed McFall will officiate. Interment will follow at Ottawa Indian Cemetery, southeast of Miami.
Indian rites will be conducted by Cap Ulrey.
He will be on display at the home, 316 Kentucky Ave. in Quapaw, until the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami.
