A goal by freshman midfielder Lionel Fombe carried the Northeastern A&M Golden Norsemen soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Crowder College Roughriders Thursday in the season opener for both teams on the NEO pitch.
Fombe (5-10 from McAlester), who joined the soccer team after playing football last season at NEO, scored with 24:12 left in the second half. His shot on goal came off a set play after Crowder was called for a foul.
"We played a very strong defense the entire match," Golden Norse head coach John Parrigon said. "Not only did we not allow a goal, but we contained their offense and didn't let them have many shots on goal."
Sophomore Blake Ward of Joplin, Mo., manned the net for the Norsemen and made seven stops on shots by the Roughriders.
NEO remains at home Sunday with the men hosting the Broncbusters of Dodge City, Kan., at 3 p.m.
Coach Lisa Bell's Lady Norse open their season at 1 p.m. against Dodge City.
