There will be basketball in the area tonight after all.
Fairland will host Wyandotte and Welch entertains Quapaw in Lucky 7 Conference play — despite the fact that all four schools have been out all week due to the weather.
Welch was to have marked homecoming tonight, but that’s been pushed back to Jan. 16, when it hosts Commerce.
“We’ve been getting into the gym all week, but we were pretty rusty in both of our scrimmages,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “Hopefully we’ll be in better shape by now.”
Afton’s first-round games in the Mike Kerr Classic at Morrison have been pushed back to today.
The Eagles now will play Pawnee today at 12:20 p.m. while the AHS girls battle Garber at 1:40 p.m.
Because of the postponement, the tournament now will wrap up on Monday, but Afton won’t be around.
The school already had make-up games with Commerce from earlier in the season on its schedule for Monday night.
“We had already jockeyed our schedule around for the tournament,” Afton girls’ coach Ike Mustain said.
In addition to the Monday games, Afton hosts White Oak on Tuesday, Oaks Thursday and Welch next Friday.
Casualties of the weather include Bluejacket’s homecoming games against White Oak and Verdigris Valley Conference play pitting Jay at Miami.
Bluejacket principal Shellie Baker said a make-up date has not been set.
The Fairland seventh grade tournament, originally scheduled for this week, now will start Thursday.
Conditions are expected to improve starting Sunday.
The overnight low is expected to be minus-8 tonight and minus-4 Saturday night.
The high will finally break the freezing point Sunday (33) and Monday’s high is expected to be 38.
The forecast calls for the mercury to be in the mid-40s by Wednesday.
