WELCH — Thirteen, 7 and 34 were the numbers of the night for Welch Saturday night during its 57-37 victory over Commerce.

The win was the 13th in 14 games for the Wildcats, who are now 7-0 in Lucky 7 Conference play.

Joey Powers, Welch’s 6-5 senior forward, had a game-high 34 points to lead the way offensively for the Cats.

Welch jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

It was 30-17 at the half and 45-26 going into the fourth quarter.

“We got out of the gates strong,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “Usually, the first quarter is our best quarter of the game. With the exception of one game, we come out strong.”

The Wildcats pumped in seven 3-point goals, with six different players nailing at least one trey.

Powers and Chance Harris had two each while Gabe Moore, Austin Buchanan and Brenton Hale added one each.

“We had guys step up and hit shots when they were open,” Schertz said. “Our defense created a lot of the offense.”

Powers got 19 of his 34 points in the first half. That’s the third time he’s had 30 or more in a game this season.

He’s averaging 24.4 points a game.

“He’s playing at a different level,” Schertz said. “He had the two treys and got some points out of transition.”

Kyler Ng had 11 points for Commerce, which had lost to the Wildcats 61-39 last Tuesday.

Commerce gained a split on the night by coasting to a 49-37 victory.

The Lady Tigers (9-3 overall and 5-2 in league play) broke out to a 15-12 lead in the opening frame then held a 14-5 edge in the second quarter.

Welch outscored CHS 8-4 in the third only to have the Lady Tigers ice the victory with a 16-12 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Mandy Watson had 20 points to head up the Commerce offense.

Krystin Marlow had 13 points while Tyler Dodson and Sierra Hankins tallied 11 each for Welch.

Commerce begins play in the Sarcoxie (Mo.) Tournament Monday.

Both CHS teams face host Sarcoxie, the girls playing at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.

Welch is idle until the start of the Northeastern A&M High School Tournament on Thursday.

The Lady Wildcats face White Oak at 4:30 p.m. in the NEO Fieldhouse. The Welch boys meet Roland at 7:30 p.m. in the NEO Student Activity Center.
