CHANUTE, Kan. — Two teams that went undefeated during last weekend's Jayhawk Shoot-Out collide today as the Northeastern A&M Lady Norse battle Neosho County Community College at 6 p.m. in the Panther Fieldhouse.
After defeating Highland, Kan., 65-45, and Fort Scott, Kan., 81-62, during the Jayhawk Shoot-Out last weekend in Coffeyville, coach Jim Rowland's Lady Norse enter the game with a 13-2 season record. The Lady Norse have won seven straight games.
First-year head coach Tonika Bruce has guided the Panthers to a three-game winning streak and a 4-7 record. The Panthers defeated Colby, Kan., 80-63, and Dodge City 78-62 last weekend during the Shoot-Out.
“We want to go into the month-long Christmas break on a positive note,” Rowland said. “We've been playing very solid defensively and our offense has been coming around.”
The Lady Norse return to the hardwoods on Jan. 10 with a 6 p.m. Bi-State Athletic Conference game at Seminole State College.
“With the semester break as long as it is, I threw a game in on the last day of final exams trying to shorten the gap between games,” Rowland said. “I didn't shorten it much because there is still at least four weeks before we can bring them back.”
With seven returning sophomores, the Panthers will start sophomores Adel Morris, Fila Smith and Danielle Harris at guards.
Morris (5-7 of Atlanta, Ga.) is averaging 6.3 points with 32 assists and 23 steals at point guard for the Panthers.
Smith (5-9 of Chicago, Ill.) leads Neosho County with 59 assists and 39 steals while averaging 14.7 points per game. She also grabs 8.5 rebounds per game.
Harris (5-7 of Leesburg, Fla.) averages 10.2 points with 22 assists and 21 steals.
Comprising the Lady Norse guard spots are freshman Carla McKinney and sophomores Megan Fraley and Kali Bassett.
McKinney (5-4 of Desoto, Texas) is averaging 2.4 points with 13 assists and 18 steals.
Fraley (5-7 of Adair) ranks 20th in the NJCAA with 77 assists and 26 steals while averaging 15.1 points per game.
Bassett (5-8 of Grove) has a 9.1 scoring mark with 24 assists and nine steals.
Sophomores Colette Montgomery and Ashley Milian will start along the Panthers front line.
Montgomery (5-8 of Atlanta, Ga.) averages 6.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game on the wing.
Milian (6-0 of Riverview, Fla.) leads the Panthers both in scoring (16.9) and rebounding (9.8).
Veterans Nolisha Markham and Skye Rees will matchup inside for the Lady Norse.
Markham (5-10 of Tulsa) is averaging 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Rees (6-2 of Melbourne, Australia) ranks 18th in the nation with an 18.3 scoring average while grabbing 5.2 rebounds per contest.
