Unable to score the tying run from third base, Northeastern A&M's 10th ranked Golden Norsemen suffered an 8-7 loss Monday to the Crowder College Roughriders at Homa Thomas Field.
With the loss coach Roger Ward's Golden Norse are 11-4 on the year while the Roughriders are 12-5 overall.
The Norsemen travel to Arkansas City, Kan., Wednesday, for a 2 p.m. nine-inning clash with Cowley County Community College. The Tigers are 8-8 on the season.
Trailing 8-6 going into the bottom of the ninth inning against Crowder, the Norsemen received a lead off double to right-center by Pete Hoyt.
Mark Podlas grounded out to first as Hoyt advanced to third. Kevin Meyers doubled, scoring Hoyt.
Cody Riley bounced out to short with Meyers taking third base.
After Dom Samyn walked, Josh Schnable struck out swinging to end the game.
Crowder started the game scoring six runs in the top of the first inning.
Cody Althouse doubled and Justin Treece walked. After Logan Pearson walked to fill the bases, Althouse scored on a wild pitch. Tony Standifer singled, scoring Treece.
The marathon inning continued for Crowder as Drew Crain reached first on catcher's obstruction. Samuel May followed with a grand slam homerun to produce a 6-0 Roughriders lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Podlas singled and advanced to second on a fielding error in center. After a walk by Meyers, Riley singled to left scoring Podlas. Samyn followed with a three-run homer to create a 6-4 deficit.
Sandifer singled to start a two-run third inning by the Riders. Kyle Dickens singled and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Crain hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Sandifer before Dickens scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.
NEO added a solo run in the bottom of the sixth after Samyn was struck by a pitch with one out. Schnable was also hit by a pitch before Calvin Ellis reached on a fielder's choice as Schnable was tagged out at second base. Samyn scored on a wild pitch as NEO trailed by an 8-5 score.
The Golden Norsemen added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Riley was hit by a pitch and Samyn reached on a fielding error by Crowder pitcher Dustin Kremer. Schnable was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. Ellis reached on an error at short as Riley crossed the plate. The potential big inning ended on fly balls to right by Samuel Groleau and shortstop by Nick Shiplett.
Samyn collected two of the seven Golden Norse hits along with three RBI.
Treece and Standifer contributed two hits each to lead the Crowder nine-hit attack.
