ROGERS, Ark. — There’s something about Northwest Arkansas that suits Ben Briscoe just fine.
The Welshman got his only NGA Hooters Tour victory here in 2008 and posted a first-round 63 Thursday to grab a two-shot lead in the Bentonville Open presented by Lindsey Management Company.
Briscoe had eight birdies on the day, including seven straight. Starting the day on No. 10 at Lost Springs Golf & Athletic Club, he birdied 14 through 18, then had another two on No. 1 and 2.
At one point during his run, he was 7-under par.
Andy Winings was two strokes back at 65.
There was a three-way tie at 66 between Chris Naegel, former PGA Tour member Perry Moss and Cameron Bishop.
Brian Carroll, Brennan Webb, Garrett Jones, Joshua Wooding and C.D. Hockersmith were tied for sixth with 67s.
Defending champion David Miller was in a massive 16-way tie for 11th at 68.
Ted Potter, who is the defending champ at the Buffalo Run Casino Classic — which unfolds next week — is tied for 38th with 14 players at 70.
Included in that group is Will Wilcox, who ranks second on the tour in earnings this season.
Wilcox will bypass the BRCC since he has an exemption for the Fort Smith (Ark.) Classic, which also runs next week.
Jeff Corr, who won the 2008 Buffalo Run Casino Classic, is in danger of missing the cut here. He was in a tie for 121st at 75.
The top 70 players plus ties will advance following today’s play.
