JAY - The roller coaster ride is on the way back up for the Miami Lady Wardogs.

After losing a pair of extra-inning heartbreakers earlier in the week, MHS pulled out a pair of one-run victories during the Jay Festival here Friday.

The Lady Wardogs nipped Westville 3-2 then escaped with a 1-0 decision against Kansas, Okla., in their second outing of the day.

“We made some mistakes but we still found a way to win,” Miami coach Chris Mercer said. “That's what you have to do - it's a game of overcoming mistakes when it gets to be a one-run game.”

An 8-1 victory over Fairland was sandwiched around a 2-1 loss in eight innings to Vinita on Monday then Claremore Sequoyah bagged a 3-2 win in nine innings Thursday.

During Friday's action, an error allowed Megan Madden to score the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh against Westville, then Megan Barnes doubled home Kylee Carder with the game's only run against Kansas.

“It's been a crazy week,” Mercer said. “Three of the four games were one-run games. That's the game of softball, though.”

The Lady Wardogs had a Saturday Verdigris Valley Conference double-header at Locust Grove postponed due to a wet field. Mercer said he hopes to make the games up.

MHS travels to Grove Monday for a middle school-varsity-JV triple-header starting at 4 p.m.

Madden had opened the third inning against Kansas by reaching on an error.

She was erased on a fielder's choice by Carder, then Barnes doubled in the run.

Barnes eventually reached third but was left stranded.

Carder walked with two out in the fifth, then stole second, but was unable to score.

Then in the sixth, Kelsey Neal singled with one out and Courtnei Young was safe on an error. However, Shelby Jurgensmeyer popped up and Neal was thrown out at third.

Kansas had runners at third base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and stranded seven runners - but was unable to break through against Neal.

The Lady Comets wound up with five hits in the game.

Neal had two singles for Miami. Barnes doubled and Jessica Kelly singled.

Miami 3, Westville 2

Errors gave the Lady Wardogs the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Haiden Rowland reached base to lead off the inning, but wound up being cut down at home when Madden reached on a bunt.

Allison Hayes reached on another error, then Madden scored when Carder hit a fly ball to center field.

The Lady Wardogs broke out to a 2-0 lead in the third.

Hayes singled and went to second on a passed ball. Barnes had a two-out single that drove in Hayes, then Neal picked up another RBI with a single to right.

Westville tied the score in the fourth.

MHS threatened in the fifth and sixth. Kelly singled and went to second in the fifth, then Young singled and made it to third in the sixth, but both were stranded.

Barnes double and Kelly, Neal, Young and Hayes collected singles for the Lady Wardogs.
