AFTON - Nowata jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and coasted to a 14-9 victory over Afton in a non-conference baseball game here Thursday afternoon.

The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles, who had opened with an 8-1 win against Oaks on Tuesday.

Nowata. under former Fairland coach Brandon Lierle, added four runs in the second and tacked on another four in the fourth.

The Ironmen scored single runs in the fifth and sixth frames then capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh.

Afton scored a single run in the second and added three in the bottom of the third. That narrowed the gap to 6-4.

The Eagles attempted to keep pace by scoring twice in the fourth, once in the fith and two more times in the sixth.

Nowata collected 21 hits in the game, including three doubles and two triples.

The Eagles also hurt themselves by committing seven errors.

Zach Dotson started on the mound for Afton and was relived by Dusty Henry and Cecil Jones.

Afton collected nine hits in the game.

The Eagles are idle until March 8, when they host Copan.
