PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) - Kyle Broyles, the son of Pittsburg State University head football coach Chuck Broyles, was found dead Wednesday in his Wichita apartment. He was 28.
Wichita police have not released a cause of death.
“I had talked to Kyle just last week when we were practicing for the Emporia State game,” said Larry Garman, Pittsburg State's tight ends coach and Kyle Broyles' coach at Pittsburg High School. “I had a nice visit with him and he appeared to be doing real well and it was really a shock.”
Broyles' death was the third tragic blow to the university's athletics department in the last five months. Sean Kyle, a redshirt freshman lineman for the football team, died in a construction accident June 19. A month later, the school's associate athletic director for marketing, Tommy Riggs, died of a heart attack.
Broyles played for two years at Pittsburg State for his father - who is the Gorillas' all-time winningest head coach - before a knee injury as a sophomore in 1999 ended his playing career.
Chuck Broyles was an assistant coach at Miami High School in the 1980s.
Visitation will be Sunday at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, with the funeral at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene.
