QUAPAW - Defending champ Welch heads up the field for the Quapaw Tournament that begins Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats, who qualified for the Class A state tournament last year, decked Commerce 7-5 in the finals thanks to Melissa Fansler's three-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Commerce had taken a 4-3 lead in the fourth but fell victim to a Lady Wildcat rally in their final at-bat.

Vinita eked out a 1-0 victory against Fairland in the third-place game.

Afton finished fifth by beating Quapaw 8-0 and Wyandotte was seventh with an 8-1 win over Ketchum.

Four pool games are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the final round on Saturday, capped by the 1:30 p.m. championship game.

The schedule on the first day includes Ketchum vs. Commerce, 3:30 p.m.; Afton vs. Vinita, 5 p.m.; Fairland vs. Welch, 6:30 p.m., and Wyandotte vs. Quapaw, 8 p.m.

Thursday's schedule includes Welch vs. Afton, 3:30 p.m.; Commerce vs. Wyandotte, 5 p.m.; Vinita vs. Fairland, 6:30 p.m., and Ketchum vs. Quapaw, 8 p.m.

The slate for the final day of pool play includes Afton vs. Fairland, 3:30 p.m.; Wyandotte vs. Ketchum, 5 p.m.; Welch vs. Vinita, 6:30 p.m., and Commerce vs. Quapaw, 8 p.m.

The seventh-place game will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by the fifth-place contest at 10:30 a.m. and the third place game at noon.

Quapaw, Wyandotte, Commerce and Ketchum are in the green pool while Welch, Fairland, Vinita and Afton make up the white pool.

The games will mark the season opener for Quapaw, Commerce and Fairland.

Wyandotte, Afton and Welch open their seasons on Tuesday. Wyandotte will play in the Jay Festival while Afton and Welch are at Oklahoma Union and South Coffeyville, respectively
