FAIRLAND — A rally down the stretch helped the Wyandotte boys turn back Fairland 61-57 here Friday night in a Verdigris Valley Conference basketball game.

“The kids played so hard — we had them down by seven and they came charging back,” Fairland coach Justin Goins said. “They (the Bears) know how games like that are won.”

Wyandotte carried a 25-15 lead into the intermission, but the Owls drilled six 3-point goals and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line while exploding for 28 points in the third quarter.

That gave Fairland a 43-39 lead heading into the final stanza.

But the Owls converted on just one of six trips to the line in the fourth quarter, when Wyandotte held a 22-14 advantage. Dakota Sparks scored nine of his 14 points over the last eight minutes.

The Bears took the lead for good with about two minutes left, Wyandotte coach Paul Duncan said.

“We just started making some shots,” Duncan said. “Our second team got things going. (Tyler) Buckallew, D.J. (Burleson) and (Jeff) Martin helped us out.”

Sparks, Martin and Shane Friend all scored in double figures for the Bears. Martin had 13 points while Friend added 12.

Jesse Drosche, a 6-4 sophomore forward, had a double-double for the Owls — scoring 28 points while grabbing 24 rebounds.

“He was just all over the place,” Goins said.

Jacob Bryant and Jon Henry scored 14 and 12 points for Fairland, respectively. Bryant got most of his points by hitting four treys.

Wyandotte rolled to a 46-17 victory in the girls’ game.

Fairland jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Bears held a 13-3 edge in the second frame.

Wyandotte continued to pull away in the second half thanks to 15-2 and 15-6 margins.

Abbi Munson netted 13 points to head up the WHS scoring. Kayla Oleman had eight, Jesse Stone seven and Morgan Compton scored six for the Lady Bears.
