Sophomore center Skye Rees scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Northeastern A&M Lady Norse to a 77-73 victory Wednesday night over the Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Lady Jets in the NEO Fieldhouse.

“We were lucky we were playing at home,” Lady Norse head coach Jim Rowland said. “Not only did we give up 35 points to (Deeva) Vaughn, but they killed us on the boards.

“You can’t be outrebounded 23-14 on the offensive boards and expect to win,” Rowland said. “We just gave up too many second shots.”

Along with winning their fifth straight game against teams from the Bi-State West, the Lady Norse are 11-2 on the season. Coach Scott Morris’ Lady Jets slip to 10-3 on the season and 1-3 against the Bi-State East.

Following a day off today, the Lady Norse travel to Coffeyville, Kan., Friday, to play in the three-day Jayhawk Shoot-Out.

The Lady Norse face Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College at 3 p.m. Friday before closing out the round robin at 9 a.m. Sunday against Highland (Kan.) Community College.

“We had a chance to put Northern away, but we didn’t take it,” Rowland said. “I’ve said all season that we’re hard to stop inside if we play strong and finish our shots.

“With Skye, she is so versatile that she can give us points in the paint and hit shots from the perimeter,” Rowland said. “She hit 56 percent (14 of 24) from the field and that’s pretty good.”

Vaughn (6-0 freshman from Albuquerque, N.M.) countered the performance by Rees by sinking 14 of 26 from the field and 5 of 5 at the free throw line for a game-high 35 points for the Lady Jets.

“We allowed her too many second shots,” Rowland said. “She has a good enough touch that if she has a shot, she’ll take it.”

Six straight points by Rees along with a 3-pointer by Kali Bassett and a layup by Megan Fraley gave the Lady Norse an 11-3 lead in the first five minutes of the opening half.

Three-point field goals by Bassett and Rees, along with two straight layups by freshman center Jelina Cerina and a jumper by Fraley, produced a 23-14 Lady Norse cushion midway through the first half.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Vaughn and Krista Bullis, along with a layup by Vaughn and two free throws by Kelsey Shepherd, rallied the Lady Jets to a 27-24 deficit with 7:26 before halftime.

Four straight points by Nolisha Markham and two free throws by Cerina increased NEO’s lead to 33-26 at the 5:39 juncture.

Three-pointers by Bassett, Ashley Mekeel and Markham, along with baskets by Cerina and Rees, created a 46-34 lead at halftime for the Lady Norse.

After a 3-pointer by Rees started the second half, eight straight points by Vaughn and a layup by Anna Brzozowski rallied NOC to a 49-44 deficit with 16:32 left in the game.

Rees scored seven straight points and Fraley added a basket to produce a 58-44 Lady Norse cushion with 13:50 showing on the clock.

Over the next seven minutes, Vaughn scored 10 points and Brzozowski added six, along with a 3-pointer by Alyssa Hankins, to slice the margin to 65-63 with 6:21 remaining in the game.

Two straight layups by Rees and a 3-pointer by Markham boosted the Lady Norse to a 72-65 lead with 3:10 left on the clock.

A field goal by Rees, along with two free throws by Bassett and one by Carla McKinney, closed out NEO’s scoring in the final two minutes.

Along with the 30 points from Rees, Bassett added 14 and Markham and Cerina scored 11 points each.

While Vaughn scored 35 for the Lady Jets, Bullis added 10.
